The beloved crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode season created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The previous series concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been widespread ever since, but official word only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

Show History

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and became a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC haven't revealed when the new season will premiere.

The finale of series six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers indicated at the time there were no plans for further series.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
