Patients Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such drugs should be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
