Blasts and Low-Altitude Aircraft Reported in Venezuelan Capital City Caracas

Reports surfaced of numerous detonations and the roar of low-flying jets in the Venezuelan capital in the small hours of the weekend. This incident has led to accusations from the Venezuelan leadership and requests for global scrutiny.

Caracas Accuses United States of Attack

Venezuela's authoritarian administration has accused the US of what it calls "imperialist aggression," claiming that former President Trump reportedly directed strikes against the South American nation. In an public statement, the government confirmed that strikes had impacted the capital and three other regions: Miranda, La Guaira, and Aragua.

"The only objective of this attack is to seize control of Venezuela's key assets, notably its crude oil and minerals," Venezuela declared.

Caracas called on the world to denounce the strikes, which it described a "clear infringement of international law" that placed countless of civilians in peril.

Reports of Explosions and Defense Installations Targeted

Locals reported hearing approximately several explosions around 2 a.m. local time. Citizens in several districts allegedly ran into the streets outside.

"The whole ground shook. It was horrible. We experienced blasts and jets in the area," commented one witness.

Plumes of smoke was observed billowing from key defense sites in the city: the La Carlota airbase military airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna compound, where president Maduro is believed to live.

International Condemnation

The president of bordering Colombia, claimed on social media that "Currently they are striking Venezuela... attacking it with missiles." He demanded an urgent emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.

Colombia, which just joined the UNSC, said it would activate operational protocols at its shared border with Venezuela.

Context

The reported attacks come after a prolonged pressure campaign by the US against the Venezuelan regime. Since August, authorities reported a significant American military buildup off the country's northern coast and a series of air strikes on boats suspected of narco-trafficking.

The government has stated "the implementation of external disturbance" and ordered all national defense measures to be activated. It has also called on its political forces to mobilize and "denounce this imperialist aggression."

US authorities and the US Department of Defense have not publicly addressed inquiries for clarification regarding the events.
