My plan was to book lodging after getting there, however upon reaching the city, a major event was taking place and every single budget hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out. As a visitor from Singapore, I thought the possibility of bed down in the terminal – but quickly found the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes 24 hours. Unsure of quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I boarded a bus into town and started wandering near a gaming venue, reasoning I could pass the evening in a place that was open all night. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape for acing an interview the following day, but as a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford. The world needs more individuals with such compassion. Apparently, I appeared out of place because a woman spotted me loitering in downtown and asked if I was OK. I shared the story of my accommodation crisis and without hesitation she offered I could crash on a spare mattress in her student dorm at the local university – a perfect solution, considering that was where my medical school interview would take place the next morning. She even offered me some free dinner: a leftover filled rolls she had from her part-time job. I had access to warm shower facilities and a protected spot and secure for the evening. With hindsight, I now understand what a big chance she accepted as a young woman allowing a man she had only just encountered stay in her room. At that time I was in a bubble of male privilege and did not consider to the potential danger. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she took that chance – yet very grateful. I didn’t end up go to the Australian National University, and I never saw that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of human compassion. I hope the universe has repaid her act of kindness tenfold. We could all use more folks like that woman.
